How we grade our own evidence
Most brands show you a list of ingredients. We show you how strong the science behind each one actually is — including where it's still limited.
Supported by randomised, controlled trials in dogs — several using objective force-plate gait measurement.
Positive canine trials exist, but results across studies are inconsistent. We include them for their mechanism and long clinical use.
Evidence comes mainly from human or laboratory research. These are cofactors and support nutrients — not headline actives.

Omega-3 Fish Oil (EPA/DHA)
75 mg per chewThe best-supported joint nutrient in dogs. In a randomised, double-blind controlled trial, dogs fed omega-3-enriched food showed a significant improvement in peak vertical force — an objective measure of how much weight a dog is willing to put on a limb — while the control group did not.
Key result: improvement seen in 82% of dogs on the omega-3 food vs 38% of controls over 90 days.
Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus)
75 mg per chewA New Zealand marine extract with both owner-reported and objectively measured results in dogs. One controlled study found a significant improvement in peak vertical force over 90 days — measured on a force plate, not by opinion.
Key result: 83% of supplemented dogs showed a ≥30% reduction in total arthritic sign scores after 6 weeks.
Glucosamine HCl
300 mg per chewThe most widely used joint ingredient in the world — and one of the most debated. A randomised double-blind trial in dogs found significant improvements in pain, weight-bearing and severity scores by day 70. A later meta-analysis, however, found no consistent effect. We include it at a meaningful dose and let you see both sides.
Honest note: effects, where present, build slowly — the positive trial only reached significance at day 70.
Chondroitin Sulfate
200 mg per chewA natural building block of cartilage, almost always paired with glucosamine. In a canine study, the combination measurably shifted cartilage-turnover biomarkers in joint fluid, suggesting activity at the matrix level.
Honest note: biomarker change is not the same as proven pain relief — we present it as mechanism, not outcome.
Boswellia Serrata (≥65% boswellic acids)
50 mg per chewA resin extract used for centuries, studied in dogs in a multicentre trial across 29 animals. Researchers recorded a reduction in intermittent lameness, local pain and stiff gait over six weeks.
Honest note: that study was open-label with no placebo group, so a caregiver effect can't be excluded.
Turmeric Extract (≥95% curcuminoids)
25 mg per chewIn a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled canine study, a curcuminoid-containing supplement significantly reduced pain on manipulation after three months.
Honest note: in that same study, force-plate measurements did not differ — and curcumin is poorly absorbed in dogs.
Hyaluronic Acid (sodium hyaluronate)
10 mg per chewA core component of the fluid that cushions and lubricates joints. In a canine study, ten weeks of oral hyaluronic acid significantly raised hyaluronic acid levels in joint fluid — evidence that the oral form actually reaches the joint.
Honest note: that study measured biomarkers, not mobility scores. Oral HA research in dogs is still early.
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
150 mg per chewAn organic sulfur compound. Sulfur is a structural element of connective tissue. A human pilot trial reported improved pain and physical-function scores, and safety reviews consistently rate MSM as well tolerated.
Honest note: there is no standalone placebo-controlled MSM trial in dogs. We include it as a supporting nutrient.
Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate)
10 mg per chewIncluded for antioxidant support and as a cofactor in normal collagen synthesis. We use the gentler calcium ascorbate form.
Honest note: unlike humans, dogs produce their own vitamin C in the liver — so we treat it as a supporting nutrient, never as a headline active.
Manganese (manganese sulfate)
2 mg per chewA trace mineral that acts as a cofactor for the enzymes involved in building the proteoglycans found in cartilage — which is why it appears alongside glucosamine and chondroitin in classic joint formulas.
Honest note: its role is biochemical. There is no standalone canine trial for manganese on its own.
Why we publish the weak spots too
It would be easier to write "clinically proven" across this page. We don't, because the honest picture is more useful to you: two of our actives have strong, objectively measured canine evidence, several have promising but mixed evidence, and a few are there as supporting nutrients. That's the real state of joint science — and knowing it means you can judge every other brand by the same standard.
